The French Bulldog is a dog breed of the mastiff family that appeared first in the East with the Sumerian Mastiff, whose main characteristics are a brachycephalic skull, a squat and short body close to the ground, drooping chops and imposing musculature. It descends from the English Bulldog, from which it inherits certain peculiarities, such as a flattened muzzle and a powerful jaw. The coat is fairly short, sometimes brindle.

It has long ears pointed upward and rounded. The name bulldog translates to "bull" = "bull" and "dog" = "dog", so "bull dog". Bulldogs are medium-sized, about thirty centimeters, making them relatively small mastiffs, also called molossoids.

Origins & history
A story told
Fossils that could make it possible to locate the place of origin of dogs of this type are rare. On the other hand, there is ancient evidence of their existence: the Assyrians left bas-reliefs dated to the 5th century BCE, in which dogs of this type appear, similar to dogs from Tibet. Their natural abilities for fighting made them valued auxiliaries of barbaric warrior groups from eastern regions. The initial breed, present for approximately 5,000 years in the Tibetan region and used mainly as a weapon and assistant for hunting large game, evolved greatly over its journey to Europe, due to the constraints of nomadic life and crossbreeding with local breeds. The breed may have been introduced to Great Britain by Phoenician navigators under the name "Pugnace of Brittany", its origin probably comes from the "Mastiff of Epirus". Their use as combat animals, against other dogs, large animals or against wild beasts (bears, lions, bull, etc.) is also documented, arousing admiration for their courage. These practices only began to decline in the United Kingdom in 1835, when a law prohibited them: they nevertheless persisted clandestinely for at least half a century. It is these practices that gave it its name: bull-dog (bull, in English, means bull), later Frenchified into bulldog. The average size gradually decreased between their introduction to Europe and the end of the 19th century, along with other morphological variations, through the selection of the least imposing individuals. Their use later evolved toward hunting rodents and buffalo in England, through crossbreeding with terrier-type dogs, which helped improve their tenacity. These successive crossbreedings probably produced individuals with straight ears.
Character
Daily temperament
The French Bulldog is a faithful and friendly dog. It adores its master. In general, cohabitation with other animals goes well. The French Bulldog is playful and mischievous, its training is easy as it wants to please its master. However, because of its morphology, it is important to respect the animal and give it enough exercise to maintain its muscles, while taking care not to demand too much while its growth is not complete. A known fact about French Bulldogs is that it hates taking a bath. However, it can be difficult to housetrain them.

Health
Health watch
Because of their flat face, bulldogs are predisposed to brachycephalic syndrome, a set of respiratory disorders that sometimes requires surgery on the soft palate to allow a reduction in its size, sometimes associated with rhinoplasty of the nostrils.

Furthermore, removal of the tonsils may also be undertaken depending on the lesions observed. The genetic characteristics such as the very flattened nose and their very short size come from human selection. Indeed, the individuals selected for breeding for aesthetic purposes are often individuals showing excessive typing. Moreover, bulldogs, because of their massive structure, are poor swimmers: it is strongly discouraged to leave them alone near a body of water. Finally, some bulldogs may also present aortic stenosis or pulmonary stenosis which can be treated by dilation using a balloon.
