Chapter 1

Getting to know the Border Terrier

Origins & history

A story told

It bears the name of the Borders region, where it was raised. It is thought to descend from the old Bedlington Terrier type with contributions from the Lakeland Terrier and Dandie Dinmont Terrier. Its name became established in 1880. A specialized club was created in 1920. It was first used for fox hunting and to accompany packs of running dogs. Very rare in France until 1985, it has since experienced real enthusiasm.

Character

Daily temperament

It is endowed with a strong personality but with a happy character. Very attached to its owners, it loves children. It adapts to apartment life if offered long and frequent outings.

Chapter 2

Maintenance

Daily care

The Border Terrier does not shed, which implies little spontaneous hair loss but a need for regular grooming called stripping or plucking. Scissors and clippers are prohibited (except for sensitive areas: abdomen, vulva, anus). Its maintenance is nevertheless simple but depends on the quality and texture of its coat. Whether as a companion, hunting, or show dog, the number of pluckings varies between two and four per year or more. It depends on the quality of the coat and its regrowth time. Contrary to popular belief, too long a coat will not protect against bad weather, cold and biotope aggression. A good protective coat must remain tight. The Border Terrier is not a Schnauzer and does not have a beard. Its mustache should be maintained at cheek height (just pull the longest hairs). To avoid damaging its coat, it is advised not to wash it too often as the layer of fat that makes the coat waterproof disappears during washing.
