Chapter 1
Getting to know the Bichon havanais
Origins & history
A story told
Many hypotheses are put forward as to the history of this breed. The most common claims that the Havanese is an ancient dog breed that originated in the Mediterranean basin and traveled to Cuba with the ships of the time. This breed would descend from the Blanquito de la Habana (little white of Havana), a breed now extinct resulting from the Bichon de Tenerife and crosses of other bichons. It was not until the 1970s to see the Havanese develop in the United States and the 1980s to know the first imports of Havanese to Europe (mainly in Germany, Switzerland and Holland and more recently in Eastern European countries). Now this breed is present throughout Europe, but it remains very confidential.
Character
Daily temperament
The bichon is sweet, cuddly and easy to educate. It is above all a companion dog, a low barker. It only barks if it hears suspicious noises. Its hair should not be groomed or cut, but only brushed twice a week to respect the standard of the F.C.I. (International Canine Federation) In Canada, the Havanese is the 8th most popular dog breed between 2015 and 2020, according to the Canadian Kennel Club.
