The Kangal (Kangal çoban köpeği), also known as the Anatolian Shepherd Dog (Anadolu çoban köpeği) and Karabash, is a large dog breed originating from Turkey. It is a herding dog used for the protection of flocks and sometimes the guarding of properties. Until the second half of the 20th century, this breed was little known in the rest of the world but subsequently spread very rapidly, forcing Turkey to regulate its export.

Chapter 1

Getting to know the Kangal Shepherd

Origins & history

A story told

According to the International Cynological Federation (FCI), the Anatolian Shepherd Dog 'probably descends from powerful hunting dogs that existed in Mesopotamia.' Already at that time, the Anatolian Shepherd Dog was essentially used to protect flocks against natural predators such as wolves. After the establishment of the Ottoman dynasty, it also began to be used as a war dog. The historian Evliya Çelebi described that 'dogs as strong as lions' served within the Janissaries from the 17th century onwards. A scientific study published in the journal Discrete Applied Mathematics concludes that the dogs genetically closest to the Anatolian Shepherd Dog are those from Central Asia, which strongly supports the idea that these dogs were imported by nomadic Turks to Anatolia during the 11th century.

Character

Daily temperament

This dog is known for its unwavering loyalty to its family and its acute protective instinct. The Kangal is intelligent, independent, and confident. It is also reserved toward strangers, which makes it an excellent guard dog. Toward family members, it is gentle and affectionate.

Physical

Breed standard

The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is of large size, well-built, tall and powerful in constitution. A flock guard dog with a large and strong head, endowed with a double and dense coat, it must be both large and vigorous. It can be very fast. It is the most powerful dog breed in terms of bite force as its jaws can exert an average pressure of 337 kg.

Health

Health watch

The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is a rustic dog often living longer than other very large breeds. Its life expectancy ranges from ten to twelve years for dogs actively protecting in Anatolia and from thirteen to sixteen years or more for mixed or sedentary guardian dogs. Having evolved with the continental climate of the Anatolian region, it tolerates extreme cold and heat.

The only hereditary condition that can sometimes affect it, like almost all large dogs, is hip dysplasia. To avoid this problem, it is sufficient to ensure that breeding animals have been X-rayed. Nevertheless, it should be noted that the Anatolian Shepherd Dog is less affected than other large dogs since its height at the withers limits the impact of its body mass. Furthermore, the hereditary component related to dysplasia is not total as there is also an environmental factor. Thus, during growth, it is advisable not to feed the Anatolian Shepherd Dog too richly and not to have it engage in overly intense activities. The Anatolian Shepherd Dog needs daily exercise, in the form of a long walk or short run. The grooming needs are minimal. Due to its climate of origin, the Anatolian Shepherd Dog has developed a coat adapted to changing conditions. The dense undercoat protects it from extreme temperatures while allowing it to remain relatively cool in hot weather by dissipating body heat. The coat can also provide some protection against insect bites and scratches.
