The Savoyard Shepherd (sometimes called Alpine Shepherd) is a small-population dog breed originating from the subalpine region of the Alps (Northern Alps). The first traces attesting to the presence of this breed date back to the Neolithic. Non-Molossoid, of medium to large size, very muscular, it is generally distinguished by its black and tan or mottled (harlequin) color and its blue or brown mismatched eyes. It resulted from natural selection due to its geographic isolation.

Remaining unknown for a very long time, it was truly rediscovered in the 1940s. The maintenance of this ancestral breed requires reasoned reproduction excluding any crossing with other breeds, except crosses from origins (Alpine arc). This breed is very interesting because of the versatility of qualities this dog can have (cattle herding and shepherd, guard dog, search dog, draft dog, etc.)
