Origins & history
A story told
There were two distinct breeds: the short-haired Maremmano and the Abruzzese Sheepdog, until 1958 when the two breeds merged to form one, the Maremma and Abruzzese Sheepdog. It is said to descend from ancient Asian molossers. It would have family relationships with the Kuvasz (Hungarian Sheepdog). This dog is currently used for guarding flocks. The white color was selected over the centuries so that shepherds could easily distinguish it from a wolf in case of attack. It is often seen with a collar equipped with large spikes, which gives it an advantage if it has to fight predators (even though most prefer to avoid confrontation with large dogs).
Character
Daily temperament
Given its determined character, this dog is not very easy to train, and therefore it is strongly advised not to be too severe in the way of giving it orders; the peculiarity of this dog is the instinct of protection towards the people who live with it. From an early age, it is recommended to give it a lot of affection and make it feel like a participant in family life.
