Bergamasco Shepherd

This ancient flock-guarding dog breed spread throughout the Italian Alps region. The population of these dogs was especially large in the Bergamo valleys, where sheep farming was highly developed. Originally from the Bergamo region in Italy, this dog has been known for over 2,000 years. Created by the Romans to guard flocks and keep wolves at bay, it counts among its ancestors French and Asian Shepherds. Unfortunately, although this breed possesses an exceptional physique and character, it is not very widespread because its distinctive coat "frightens" potential buyers. In reality, the Bergamasco's coat should never be groomed. It can be washed (it is even recommended to do so regularly because it gets dirty quickly) but should not be brushed; it is best to let it dry in the sun. Thus, despite appearances, it is one of the easiest coats to maintain.

A magnificent shepherd, this dog is recognizable by its coat and is the cousin of the Briard. There are two types of coat: knotted hair and hair like the Briard (wiry). There are several color types: opaque black, light or dark brown, beige, light or dark gray, blonde, white, fawn, harlequin, and any other colors in two, three, or even four different colors. Its eyes can be light or dark brown, light or dark gray, and occasionally blue, which is rare. The tail is carried saber-like and the ears are triangular. It measures between 54 and 62 cm and weighs 26 to 38 kg.
