The Auvergne Herding Dog is a herding dog originating from Auvergne. Dewclaws were and remain a selection criterion for herding dogs. A dog of lupoid type, medium size, it can have different coats, most often mottled, ranging from light fawn to fawn heavily grizzled, black and tan. Part of the body may be white but always as a minority. Half of the dogs carry the merle gene which expresses visibly from birth for black and brown dogs by partially obscuring their colors.

Origins & history
A story told
Originally, the Auvergne Herding Dog was a kind of country herding dog, with variable coat, present throughout the region until the early 1980s. At the same time the population was gradually replaced and virtually disappeared in the 2000s, supplanted in breeding by the Border Collie before an association in Cantal decided to preserve it. It had only identified a population of about twenty dogs at that time. By 2016, this population had grown to about forty individuals.
