The Groenendael (sometimes spelled grœnendael) is a variety of Belgian Shepherd dog born in the early 20th century. Breeding began by chance around 1890. Nicolas Rose, owner of the café restaurant 'le Château de Groenendael', near Brussels, raised a black puppy and obtained a female of the same type. This pair founded the breed. It is one of four varieties of the Belgian Shepherd breed, the others being the Tervueren, the Laekenois and the most well-known, the Malinois.
