Chapter 1

Getting to know the Belgian Shepherd

Character

Daily temperament

Belgian Shepherds were selected for their intelligence and ability to be attentive to their surroundings. They are therefore often very sociable and cope poorly with repeated solitude. The Belgian Shepherd is generally benevolent and protective towards members of its family, including children. Its gentle nature and balanced temperament make it an ideal companion for the young.

Physical

Breed standard

Height at withers: it is on average 62 cm for males and 58 cm for females. Limits: minus 2 cm, plus 4 cm. Weight: males approximately 25-30 kg. Females approximately 20-25 kg. The name Belgian Shepherd dog (or Belgian Shepherd) can refer to one of four varieties: Groenendael, Laekenois, Tervueren or Malinois. In France, these four varieties are considered to belong to the same breed. The International Cynological Federation (FCI) also considers this to be a single breed. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes only the Groenendael under the name "Belgian Shepherd", but also recognizes the Tervuren and Malinois as separate breeds. The Australian National Kennel Council and New Zealand Kennel Club recognize all four as distinct breeds. The Canadian Kennel Club, Kennel Union of Southern Africa and The Kennel Club (UK) follow the International Cynological Federation. All are often intelligent dogs, of similar general size. They differ only in their coat and appearance.
