Origins & history
A story told
Originally, the Bedlington Terrier bore the name Rothbury Terrier, in honor of the Rothbury district located on the border of England. In Rothbury, Bohemian nail-makers highly prized the breed as a hunter of various types of game, including badgers. Around 1825, a male Rothbury was mated to a female Bedlington, thus creating the Bedlington Terrier. The Whippet was probably added at some point to make the breed faster and more athletic. Other sources mention the Dandie Dinmont Terrier as a participant in the breed. The Bedlington Terrier was used as a vermin hunter by miners in Bedlington, who also exploited its courage as a fighting dog in the mines. Hunters also used them as retrievers. The Bedlington Terrier was first presented as a distinct breed in 1877. It is a rare dog breed in France.
Character
Daily temperament
It is a very gentle dog in nature, it is very affectionate and close to its master, it has no tendency to run away. It has long periods of calm at home, but is lively outdoors and prone to play. It barks little and is not a very good guard dog. It welcomes visitors willingly, has no aggressiveness towards its peers, contrary to what was once said of it. The Bedlington is a dog that requires great maintenance for its coat. All grooming is done with a comb and scissors. It is a companion dog, loving comfort.
