Chapter 1

Getting to know the Beagle-harrier

Origins & history

A story told

Crosses between Beagle and Harrier have been carried out since the 18th century in an attempt to obtain a medium-sized Beagle, that is, dogs capable of following horses at gallop during hunts. In the 19th century, Baron Gérard Grandin de l'Eprevier achieved the desired result. Currently, this breed is rarely encountered outside of France.

Character

Daily temperament

The temperament and character of the Beagle-Harrier are not described in the FCI standard of the breed. Frank, affectionate and enthusiastic, it is an intelligent and inexhaustible dog. It is also very curious, mischievous and playful.

Physical

Breed standard

The Beagle-Harrier is a medium-sized running dog of middle type, harmonious and balanced appearance. The length of its muzzle is roughly equal to that of the skull. The profile of the muzzle is tapered without being square or pointed. The eyes are well open and dark in color. The short and medium-wide ears are attached on the line of the eye. The shape is slightly rounded in its middle part. They fall flat along the skull and turn in a slight oval on their lower part. The coat is fairly thick, short and flat. The coat is tricolor.
