Getting to know the Basset suédois
Origins & history
A story told
The Swedish Basset is descended from the Westphalian Basset imported to Sweden in 1910. In the 1930s, this basset acquired a solid reputation for deer hunting among Swedish hunters. This game becoming increasingly widespread on hunting grounds, a Swedish variety of the Westphalian Basset, two centimeters larger at the withers, developed and took the name "Drever" from 1947 onward. During the development of the breed, it is possible that the Drever received the contribution of indigenous running dogs and other bassets. In 1953, the Swedish Basset was recognized as a Swedish breed. The breed is very present in Sweden, where it is the most popular hunting dog, but is virtually unknown outside this country.
Character
Daily temperament
The Fédération Cynologique Internationale standard describes the Drever as a dog with an ardent and balanced character, never aggressive, fearful or timid. Tenacious, it requires good training.
Physical
Breed standard
The Drever is a small-sized running dog, fairly long in body and short-legged, of basset type. It gives an impression of sturdiness. The muscles are well developed. Sexual dimorphism is marked. The long and thick tail at birth is carried preferably hanging. Rather large in relation to the body, the somewhat elongated head tapers toward the nose. The length of the muzzle is equal to that of the skull. The eyes of dark brown color are neither prominent nor wild. The ears of medium length and width are attached fairly low and fall without crease, well fitting to the cheeks. The coat is harsh, straight and well-laid. It is shorter on the head, ears and lower parts of the limbs and longer on the neck, on the back and the back face of the thighs. The underside of the tail carries a bushy coat that does not form fringes. The coat is bi-color or tri-color. The liver color is not tolerated. The color markings must be clearly delimited. The white markings must be visible from all sides, preferably symmetrical, and preferably form a stripe, a full collar around the neck and white markings on the limbs, feet and tip of the tail.
