Chapter 1

Getting to know the Basset Hound

Character

Daily temperament

The Basset Hound is described in the International Cynological Federation standard as a tenacious, placid and affectionate dog, never aggressive or fearful. According to the Société Centrale Canine, it is a friendly dog, talented for hunting. Determined, it requires firm (but non-violent) education. The Basset Hound needs a lot of exercise. It tolerates solitude poorly. The Basset Hound is a friendly and very gentle dog, even with children. It is sociable with other animals. Some subjects must be kept on a leash during walks in nature, because they tend to follow scent trails and remain deaf to the master's calls. But this instinct is more or less pronounced depending on the individual. The Basset Hound tends to howl when it senses that something is wrong (an approaching storm, for example). It sometimes whimpers a little when seeking to attract attention. It is heard especially when begging for food or petting.

Physical

Breed standard

The Basset Hound is a small hunting dog, the heaviest of all bassets. It is an imposing dog, built solidly without being clumsy. It is above all a working dog: it is a dog that must be powerful, active and have great endurance. The body is long and well descended throughout its length. The legs are short with massive feet. Some wrinkles may be present on the limbs but they must in no case be excessive. The skin of the head is loose and forms wrinkles. Diamond-shaped, the brown eyes express melancholy and gentleness. Attached just below the eye line, the long ears slightly exceed the end of the muzzle. Very supple, fine and velvety texture, they are narrow throughout their length and well-rippled. The coat is smooth, short and tight without being too fine. All colors of the hunting dog are accepted, but the coat is generally tricolor or lemon and white.

A good weekly cleaning is recommended. The Basset Hound can also develop eye diseases. Due to its drooping eyelids, the area under the eyeball sometimes collects dirt and can get clogged due to mucus. It is best to wipe them daily with a damp cloth. This helps reduce mucus and eye irritation. The Basset Hound is one of the breeds most predisposed to developing Malassezia dermatitis.
