Chapter 1

Getting to know the Basset Bleu de Gascogne

Origins & history

A story told

All Basset Bleu de Gascogne dogs are descended from crosses of old French scent hounds including the Saint Hubert Hound. The Grand Bleu de Gascogne, however, is considered the precursor of the other blue Gascogne breeds. The Basset Bleu de Gascogne has existed for a very long time in the south of France and notably in Gascony and Bearn. The exact origins of the breed are debated. It would be the result of a mutation of the Grand Bleu de Gascogne, or, according to a second hypothesis, it would come from a cross between Saintongeois Bassets and Bleus de Gascogne. The breed is clearly identified towards the end of the 19th century and a first standard is drafted in 1919. After World War II, it became very rare, and became more common after 1980.

Character

Daily temperament

The Basset Bleu de Gascogne is described in the International Cynological Federation standard as an active and lively dog, affectionate and cheerful. The Bleus de Gascogne in general are considered docile and very attached to their master, very gentle with children and sociable with other dogs. It can live in an apartment, but it must be accustomed to it from its earliest age and allowed frequent outings. Considered intelligent and sensitive, the breed is easy to train. Moreover, firm training is necessary, as not everyone will appreciate its voice.

Physical

Breed standard

The Basset Bleu de Gascogne is a small scent hound, of basset type, of powerful and corpulent construction without heaviness. The strong tail at its attachment is carried like a saber blade. It is sometimes slightly erect. At rest, the tip just reaches the ground. The very typical head recalls its close kinship with the Grand Bleu de Gascogne. The skull is of medium width with a slightly marked occipital bump, a long and slightly curved muzzle. The ear is fine, long, crinkled and set very low. It ends in a point. The eyes are dark brown. The coat is short, coarse and tight. The coat with white and black speckles is marked with black patches of "slate blue" appearance. Two black patches are generally placed on each side of the head and cover the ears and the area around the eyes. These patches do not meet on the top of the skull: a small black oval patch is frequently found in the white interval. Two more or less vivid tan marks are placed above the eyebrow arch. Tan traces are present on the cheeks, the lips, the inner surface of the ears, the limbs and under the tail.
