Origins & history
A story told
Created in the 19th century by Jean-Emmanuel Le Coulteux de Canteleu and Louis Lane, the Basset Artésien Normand results from crosses between two now-extinct dog breeds: the Basset of Normandy and the Basset of Artois (descended from the Dog of Artois). The first standard dates from 1898. It is modified in 1910 and 1923. The breed is introduced to England and the United States. The Basset Artésien Normand is essentially present in France and the United States.
Character
Daily temperament
The Basset Artésien Normand is described in the International Cynological Federation standard as a gay and affectionate dog. According to the French Kennel Club, the breed is intelligent and has a good memory. It is a calm, kind and patient dog with children. Naturally rather obedient, they however require firm training when young as it is a stubborn animal. Basset Artésien Normands do not like to be alone. Beware of their playfulness as they are capable of jumping surprisingly high and standing on their hind legs. They are also very enduring, they can cover long distances and are ideal partners for jogging. Basset Artésien Normands are very routine-oriented: once accustomed to the placement of things in a room, the placement of their basket and their lifestyle, they hate any change.
Physical
Breed standard
The Basset Artésien Normand is a small running dog of basset type. Of athletic build, the body is long in relation to its size, without heaviness and built for sport. Strong at birth, the tail tapers gradually toward the tip: the tip of the tail just reaches the ground and is carried in a sabre. The medium-width skull has a pronounced occipital bump and a slightly curved muzzle. Oval in shape, the large eyes are dark in color in harmony with the coat. The corkscrew and very long ears are attached as low as possible. They reach at least the length of the muzzle and preferably end in a point. The coat is short, short and dense. The coat is tricolor (fawn, black and white) or bicolor fawn and white. For tricolors, the head should be heavily colored fawn-red with the presence of darker hairs forming a circle on the temples.
