Chapter 1
Getting to know the Czech Terrier
Origins & history
A story told
Before World War I, the Czech Beard is the most widespread pointing dog breed in the territories of Bohemia and Moravia of the former Austria-Hungary. The war decimated the populations and the breed nearly disappeared. The present-day Czech Beard therefore descends from a few typical subjects that allowed the breed to be regenerated. The Czech Beard is a popular breed today in the Czech Republic and Slovakia where it ranks second among the most used dog breeds.
Character
Daily temperament
The FCI standard of the Czech Beard does not give any typical temperament of the breed. The Czech Beard has a strong temperament, easy to handle and attached to its master.
Physical
Breed standard
The Czech Beard is a medium-sized dog with a noble and solid bearing. The short and sturdy back slopes toward the croup, the withers are well marked. The tail is carried horizontal or very slightly raised, it extends the line of the back. It is docked to three-fifths of its length. The muzzle tapers from the eyes toward the wide nose. The eyes are almond-shaped. The hanging ears are set very high. Their base is wide and narrows toward the tip. The coat has a soft and dense undercoat, 1.5 cm long, which prevents moisture from reaching the skin and sheds almost entirely in summer, a hard and stiff guard hair 3 to 4 cm long and hard and straight bristles 5 to 7 cm long. The coat is shorter and hard on the anterior surface of the limbs while it forms fringes on the posterior surface. The coat forms marked beard and eyebrows on a face with shorter hair. Coat colors are dark roan, with or without brown patches, brown with ticked markings on the chest and lower part of the limbs and solid brown.
