Chapter 1

Getting to know the Thai Bangkaew

Origins & history

A story told

The Thai Bangkaew is an ancient breed, originating from the village of Bangkaew in the province of Phitsanulok in Thailand. Legend has it that the breed is the result of a cross between a black and white female dog, belonging to a Buddhist priest and a wild canine. The selection policy began in 1957. It is a popular breed in Thailand and the Bangkaew is considered a precious heritage of the province of Phitsanulok. The breed has been definitively recognized by the International Cynological Federation since June 2022.

Character

Daily temperament

The Bangkaew is described as alert, intelligent, loyal, attentive and obedient in the standard. It is easy to train and can be distant with strangers.

Physical

Breed standard

The Thai Bangkaew is square in construction and well-proportioned, with a wide and high chest. The fairly wide face is wedge-shaped. Eyes of medium size are almond-shaped, black or dark brown in color. The ears appear small in proportion to the head, they are triangular in shape, held forward. The tail is plume-shaped and should be more pronounced in the male, carried curved above the back. The topcoat is straight and coarse while the undercoat is soft and dense. A ruff forms around the neck and shoulders. The accepted coats are lemon, red, fawn, fire or grey, with or without charred extremities and black. Symmetrical markings on the face are preferable.
