Origins & history
A story told
The Anglo-French Petit Venery is a French hunting dog whose breed was created in the 1950s, from crosses between the Harrier and the Poitevin, as well as the Petit Gascon-Saintongeois, the Porcelaine, and the Petit Bleu de Gascogne. It was first called petit anglo-français before taking its definitive name when its standard was filed in 1978.
Character
Daily temperament
The FCI standard does not give a typical temperament or character for the breed. It is an enduring hunting dog, easy to train, and intelligent. This dog is not suited to city life and requires a lot of physical activity. Resourceful, it is reactive and quick-witted. It is better suited to life in a group, with its peers, than to city life.
Physical
Breed standard
The Anglo-French Petit Venery is a medium-sized hunting dog, balanced and solidly built, but without heaviness. Of medium length, the fairly fine tail is attached in the extension of the loin line. The coat is dense. The head is elongated and not too wide. It has a moderately elongated muzzle and a somewhat tapered appearance with a straight or slightly curved muzzle line. The eyes are large, brown, with a soft and lively expression. The ears are finely attached below the eye line level, flexible, and slightly folded. Of medium width, the ears reach at least two fingers from the base of the nose. The coat is short, dense, and smooth. The coat can be tricolor (white and black with lively colored tan), white and black with pale tan, or bicolor (white and tan). The nose is black, except for white and tan subjects, where it takes a tobacco color.
