Chapter 1

Getting to know the American Alsatian

Origins & history

A story told

This dog breed is the result of crosses between Alaskan Malamute, German Shepherd, Great Pyrenees (standard size), Anatolian Shepherd and Mastiff. The first generation of American Alsatian was recognized in 1988 in the United States by the National American Alsatian Club, after twenty years of selection in breeding. The goal was to recreate a dog that resembles the canis dirus ("dire wolf"), having specific characteristics, similar to the canis dirus.

Character

Daily temperament

This dog is used solely as a companion dog, but it can be dissuasive because of its muscular and powerful appearance. It is also an animal used as a therapy dog. This dog is loyal, tolerant toward family, children and other animals. It is suspicious while maintaining distance from strangers. This translates to a distancing from the stranger, without being aggressive or fearful. Intelligent and attentive, it is calm as long as it can get enough exercise.

Chapter 2

Daily life

The American Alsatian of your dreams may already be waiting in a shelter. Hundreds of american alsatian (and equally wonderful crossbreeds) are looking for a family in France — every adoption starts a new story.

Health watch

It is not uncommon for individuals of this breed to live 13 to 14 years. It does not require more exercise than the German Shepherd. It is a rather slow dog; a daily walk in parks may be sufficient for it. It prefers to work in calm conditions, notably as a therapy dog. It does not need much space, but does not tolerate extreme heat. It can adapt to many environments.
