The American Akita is a dog breed descended from the Akita Inu, also known as the Matagi Inu, an ancestral Japanese dog. The latter is itself believed to be the result of crossings between several Japanese lineages and ancient Asian types such as the Nambu, Lylama, Koyasu, and Go. Developed in Japan and then in the United States, this dog was formerly designated as the "great Japanese dog".

In 2006, the International Cynological Federation (FCI) officially established the appellation "American Akita". During World War II, the breed nearly disappeared. However, some Japanese breeders managed to preserve some lineages. After the conflict, dogs showing characteristics similar to German Shepherds and Mastiffs were introduced to the United States by military personnel. Their morphology and behavior gradually gave rise to a distinct type, today recognized as a breed in its own right.

Getting to know the Akita américain

Origins & history

A story told

The American Akita shares its origins with the Akita Inu, formerly known as the Matagi Inu, a versatile hunting dog used in the mountainous regions of northern Japan, particularly in Akita Prefecture on the island of Honshū. From the 17th century onwards, crossings with the Tosa Inu and Mastiff were made to increase the size and power of the Akita. In 1908, dog fighting was banned in the prefecture, and a society for breed preservation was founded in 1927. During World War II, the Japanese canine population was greatly reduced due to food shortages and military requisitions. Some Akitas were protected by their owners in rural or isolated areas. Crossings with German Shepherds, then used as military dogs, contributed to the survival of certain lineages. At the end of the conflict, the remaining Akitas were grouped into three types: the traditional Matagi, the fighting type, and that influenced by the German Shepherd. A dog named Kongo-go, from the Dew A lineage, sparked renewed interest in the breed. Specimens were imported to the United States by military personnel, contributing to the emergence of a distinct type, more robust and adaptable, which would become the American Akita. The American Akita Club was founded in 1956, and the breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1972. In 2006, the International Cynological Federation (FCI) formalized the distinction between the Akita Inu and the American Akita, due to the divergent evolution of Japanese and American lineages.

Character

Daily temperament

The American Akita is a calm, independent and dignified dog, whose relationship with humans is based on mutual respect, patience, and consistent education. Early and balanced socialization promotes lasting emotional stability, although this breed remains naturally more cautious toward the unknown than more widespread breeds. Its education requires gentle and consistent methods, and it is inadvisable to entrust an Akita to novice owners without proper guidance. From adoption onwards, it is recommended to expose the dog to varied environments and positive experiences in order to strengthen its confidence. Even when well-socialized, the Akita requires continuous educational follow-up. It learns quickly and retains experiences for the long term. Education must exclude any form of constraint or domination, which can lead to fear or frustration reactions. Conversely, an approach based on cooperation and positive reinforcement allows for establishing a balanced relationship. The bond between master and dog is based on intuitive and selfless interaction. The behavior of the Akita results from a balance between genetics, environment, and breeding quality. The selection of stable and well-socialized subjects from birth contributes to more serene lineages. Differences in temperament can appear within the same litter, illustrating the combined influence of heredity and experience. The American Akita can live in a house or an apartment, provided it is not isolated too frequently. Regular and moderate activity is necessary, particularly during the first year. Frequent walks in varied locations are essential to its well-being. Recall can be difficult, but appropriate education allows the dog to return willingly. Cohabitation with children is possible if it is based on mutual respect. The child must learn not to disturb the dog when eating or resting, to recognize its signals, and to avoid any constraint. The dog must be able to freely express its need for calm. Constant supervision is essential: a dog should never be left alone with a child. The Akita is a good guard dog, a quiet barker but naturally intimidating. Its suspicion of strangers and sensitivity to poorly managed environments requires good knowledge of animal communication. It is a thoughtful companion, whose physical presence is accompanied by a balanced temperament. Regarding other dogs, the Akita has an assertive temperament, typical of primitive dogs. It can be territorial or protective, particularly in the presence of other dogs. Cohabitation will depend on its character and education. Interactions between dogs of the same sex can be delicate. Its appearance (erect ears, curled tail) can be perceived as a dominant posture by other dogs, leading to conflictual reactions. It is therefore recommended to assess the individual tolerance of each Akita before any cohabitation. Early socialization is essential. Puppies are particularly receptive during the first months, a determining period for their social and emotional development. Education should include the basics of obedience, house-training, and socialization, favoring positive reinforcement. Each individual being unique, the educational approach must be adapted to its specific needs. The American Akita is sometimes wrongly perceived as not very athletic. In reality, it is calm and often under-stimulated. Its founding breeds are historically associated with functions requiring endurance and robustness. When properly solicited, the Akita demonstrates remarkable endurance and controlled power. It is particularly well-suited to Walking (sport), and jogging certain subjects can accompany depending on their morphology
