Chapter 1

Getting to know the Manx (cat)

Origins & history

A story told

The Manx cat (kayt Manninagh or stubbin in Manx), also called 'Isle of Man cat', originates, as its name suggests, from the British island of Man. A mutation of a gene caused the absence of a tail in these individuals; it developed on the island because of the isolation of the cats and excessive inbreeding.

Character

Daily temperament

The Manx is described as an easygoing cat that adapts well to changes and is affectionate with its owner. It would be a robust cat and good hunter. These character traits remain perfectly individual, however, and depend on the history of each cat.

Physical

Breed standard

The Manx is a medium to large-sized cat with a muscular, compact, powerful but entirely rounded body. The bone structure and musculature are strong, the back is straight. The legs are medium to short, also with good bone structure and musculature. The rear legs are slightly taller than the front legs and the feet are round and firm. The main characteristic of the Manx is its tail, or rather its lack of tail (caused by a mutation of the M gene.) Several types of tail length can be distinguished:

Rumpy: total absence of tail. Rumpy Riser: the tail is reduced to a cartilage protrusion located under the fur, at the end of the spine. This name comes from the fact that the stump is visible only when the cat tries to lift it (in English 'to lift' is to rise). Stumpy: the tail measures only a few centimeters and is composed of 1 to 3 caudal vertebrae. Longy: some Manx breed cats can have a tail of almost normal length, but it can be twisted and is not accepted in championship. You can find in the same Manx litter kittens with different tail lengths. You generally only encounter Manx rumpy at competitions. The head is wide and rounded with prominent cheekbones and a short, wide and well-curved nose. The eyes are large, well-open and round with a color matching the coat. The ears, medium to small in size, are wide at the base with rounded tips and are placed well-spaced on the skull. The coat is short, dense and with a thick undercoat. All colors and coats are accepted for this breed. Crossing is allowed with the Cymric, the British Longhair and the British Shorthair, however Manx rumpy, rumpy riser and stumpy can only be crossed with Manx or Cymric longy. The Manx has rear legs longer than its front legs. So to move, it hops like a rabbit and its coat similar to that of the latter accentuates the resemblance, which is the origin of the myth of the 'cabbit', an imaginary cat-rabbit hybrid. The power of the Manx's thighs would place it among the best jumpers in the feline world.
