The Lykoi is a cat breed, a natural mutation of the short-haired domestic cat. The first spontaneous mutations of the Lykoi were discovered in Virginia and then in Tennessee, followed by a natural mutation found in Italy in 2014 in Brescia, the latter having contributed to the widening of the genetic pool of the breed in Europe started in France in 2013.

In July 2016, another natural mutation appeared this time in France in Strasbourg and the kittens from this natural mutation will be integrated into the breed creation program started in France by Christine Boulanger, the importer of the breed in Europe since 2013. The main characteristic of the Lykoi is that it looks like a werewolf because of its naked mask in the face, but also its roan coat (salt and pepper) unique among cat breeds.

Chapter 1

Getting to know the Lykoï

Origins & history

A story told

Two litters of different short-haired kittens resembling Lykoi were discovered in Tennessee and Virginia in the 2010s. Between 2010 and 2011 a series of genetic and health tests were established to be certain that their partial nudity was not due to a skin disease or an condition causing this coat appearance. In 2011, the first Lykoi marriages began. The Lykoi has been part of the International Cat Association (TICA) registry since 2012 and was adopted in the "registration only" status by unanimous consent. The breed is now recognized as an advanced new breed by TICA since October 2015. Since May 1, 2017, the breed has been officially recognized with championship status by TICA and can compete against other cat breeds. A crossbreeding program with black domestic cats from which the Lykoi spontaneously originated has been started to widen the genetic pool of the breed. The Lykoi is in the process of being accepted by LOOF. Christine Boulanger, who imported the first Lykoi to Europe in 2013, submitted the breed acceptance application to LOOF in January 2016. As a result of the LOOF board meeting at the end of 2016, the Lykoi breed moves to "New Breed" status and is thus recognized by LOOF as of January 1, 2017. Since January 1, 2019, the Lykoi has been recognized with the final status of a pedigree cat by LOOF, and can compete in championships against other breeds.
