Chapter 1
Getting to know the LaPerm
Origins & history
A story told
The breed was created in 1982 in the United States, in the state of Oregon by a woman named Linda Koehl. Curly hair is due to a natural mutation of the genes of one of their farm cats named Curly. She received no special treatment compared to other farm cats, until the day she got stuck in the engine of a truck and was injured. To care for her, she stayed indoors and became a true house cat.

This is how the Koehls were able to appreciate her affectionate and loving character. She subsequently had a litter. The curly gene being dominant, all five kittens (all male) also had this characteristic. This is how LaPerm breeding began. To get outside opinions, Linda took her cats to various feline exhibitions. The judges, other breeders and visitors confirmed to her that she had very special cats. With the support of several important people in breed associations, the LaPerm obtained the status of a separate breed and a breeding program was established. Today, although not very present in Europe, the LaPerm has been exported to many other countries around the world.
Character
Daily temperament
LaPerms are described as very affectionate cats, enjoying perching on the shoulder of their owners. Of course, these character traits are perfectly individual and above all a function of each individual's history.
Physical
Breed standard
The LaPerm's curly gene is totally different from other curly breeds like the Devon Rex or the Selkirk Rex. There are short-haired and semi-long-haired LaPerms.

It is a medium-sized cat, quite elegant and well-muscled. Its weight can be surprising for its size. The tail is well-proportioned to the body, the paws also with well-rounded feet.
The head forms a triangle whose contours are softened. The nose is wide, the ears are medium-sized and well-opened at their base. Plumes are an advantage. The coat gives the impression of waves. It is quite fluffy. Furthermore, it has the advantage of losing few hairs compared to other breeds. In short-haired cats, there are no curls on the ruff and ears. In semi-long-haired subjects, the curls are very present on the throat and form a ruff. The whiskers and eyebrows are also long and curly as well as the hair inside the ears. All coats and all colors are accepted.
