Chapter 1

Getting to know the Khao Manee

Origins & history

A story told

The Khao Manee was a lucky charm breed in its country of origin and also the preferred breed of the King of Siam Chulalongkorn (Rama V). Formerly known as Khaao Plort (all white), its current name means precious stones, because of its eyes, which can each be of different colours. The Book of Cat Poems, a collection of Thai texts, is the supposed oldest trace of the breed, described from the fourteenth century onwards. According to legend, for fear of theft, King Rama V had all the Khao Manee from the palace hidden at the arrival of the English and French. The breed was kept apart by members of the royal family. To these foreigners, he would have offered Siamese cats, presented as being the royal breed, in order to preserve the true royal breed, the Khao Manee. Threatened with extinction, this breed is one of the rarest in the world. Until 1999, no individual was present outside Thailand. An American specialist in the conservation of endangered species, Colleen Freymuth, received that year the first Khao Manee to leave Thailand. She developed a conservation programme through breeding and promotion of this breed. In total she imported twelve subjects. These subjects and their descendants were subsequently transmitted to Frédéric Goedert, who for several years was the only Western breeder of Khao Manee.

Character

Daily temperament

The Khao Manee is generally described as a very affectionate cat and very attached to its owner. It is generally very sociable, lively, curious and intelligent. In fact, its character is close to that of the Siamese. The term 'dog-cat' suits it well: naturally rather talkative, it likes to communicate with its owner, whom it adores, and often recognizes its name.

Physical

Breed standard

The Khao Manee cannot in any way be confused with another white-coated cat breed. Although some Khao Manee may have black coats, these are not recognized and are used only for breeding purposes. The Khao Manee is, however, little affected by deafness phenomena, unlike the Foreign White, which, for a white cat, suggests a long selection process, in this case by Thai breeders, and thus recalls the antiquity of this breed, contrary to what some fanciful comments published on the internet have long suggested. Due to the fact that Khao Manee, unlike other feline breeds, do not have known defects or serious genetic diseases proves this long selection process in its country of origin and contributes to the growing appeal of this resistant and healthy breed. The Khao Manee is also recognized by its characteristic gait of oriental-type cats: filiform, slender, supple and fine. Its head is triangular and its coat is obligatorily short in all seasons. The Khao Manee is an elegant and graceful cat, without excess.

Another distinction, its magnificent eyes, which rightfully make it famous: the Khao Manee can be odd-eyed (yellow and blue) or blue-eyed, or yellow-eyed. It should be noted that odd-eyed cats are the most sought-after, then blue-eyed, and finally yellow-eyed. Some other colours, rarer, are possible. English speakers and Thai people describe their eyes as 'diamond eyes'... It is also important to note a rather marked sexual dimorphism between males and females, the former being generally slightly more massive. It should also be known that Khao Manee kittens often have a tuft of grey hair between their ears, which they completely lose in adulthood. The official recognition of the Khao Manee is ongoing, particularly through TICA and GCCF. It is already possible to register adult or young Khao Manee with TICA since May 2009. Janet Poulsen, TICA representative, and who has been working for several years on the development of this breed, had the largest Khao Manee cattery in the West in the 2000s. Since 2017, the breed has also been recognized by the CFA, where it is in the process of definitive recognition. Overall, only a handful of breeders in the United States, Thailand, France and Canada are working on its conservation and development. But this situation is beginning to change with growing interest in many countries thanks to promotion work via the Internet, supported by the recognition of the breed by the CFA. A programme involving breeders from all countries is working on a selection of the best subjects in Thailand and is striving to make this natural breed accessible worldwide. The first official club of the Khao Manee was established in 2009 in the United Kingdom, the 'The Khao Manee Cat Club' and several groups of enthusiasts publish regularly on Facebook, and in 2019 the CFA recognized this new breed club that brings together Western and Thai enthusiasts and breeders.

Health

Health watch

The Khao Manee, a natural breed, is a robust animal that is not subject to genetic diseases, however a fragility in the eyes, a sensitivity of the gums and a (measured) risk of deafness. Like most white-eyed cats, some subjects are born deaf. However, this is a problem that is more rare than in other breeds because of the rigorous selection that has been done.

In fact, this disability comes from a gene that affects melanocytes, responsible for hair pigmentation. Blue eyes also have an absence of pigmentation in the iris, which is the object of the same genetic mutation that causes deafness. Thus, it sometimes happens that odd-eyed cats are deaf only in the ear on the side of the blue eye.
