Chapter 1

Getting to know the Havana brown

Origins & history

A story told

At the beginning of Siamese breeding, the breed accepts all patterns. In the 1920s, Siamese breed clubs in Great Britain decided to focus only on colorpoint. Other color varieties then began to disappear. After World War II, breeding programs aimed at introducing the chocolate color resulted in the reappearance of the solid pattern. Initially, each new solid color became a new breed: the Chestnut brown foreign, of solid chocolate color, is the first breed recognized by the GCCF in 1958 and will give rise to the Havana, followed by the Lavender, of solid lilac color, then the foreign white of entirely white color. Breeders quickly realized that it was not realistic to continue with the model "one color, one breed", given the large number of coat colors existing in cats. In the United Kingdom, it was decided to split the Siamese breed into several breeds:

Colorpoint subjects are Siamese; Solid chocolate subjects are called Chestnut brown foreign or Havana. Imported to the United States, this breed gave rise to the Havana Brown; Foreigns represent solid colors that are not chocolate and include the foreign white; Oriental Shorthair contains all other colors. The British quickly recognized the breed under the name Havana Brown. We don't know exactly why this name, maybe it's related to the coat of a rabbit of the same name, or for the color of the famous cigars. The breed was imported to the United States where it was very successful. Thereafter, British subjects and American subjects differentiated themselves. The British developed the Havana Brown toward the Siamese type while the Americans kept the original type. The GCCF recognized this breed under the names Chestnut Havana Brown and Havana Brown in 1958 The breed remains rare today, especially in Europe. There are about a dozen breeding operations in the world, mainly in the United States and Canada. The American-type breed was recognized by LOOF at the end of the 1990s. Three active breeding operations are present in Europe in 2011 (2 in France, 1 in Italy). As of 2012, 2 other breeding operations make their appearance in the Hexagon. The FIFé recognizes the breed as an Oriental.
