Chapter 1

Getting to know the Celeste (cat)

Origins & history

A story told

In 2015, breeder Sophie Guittonneau had the idea of a cat entirely colored, but with blue eyes (a character present in colorpoint cats, certain white cats and, more rarely, some bicolor cats). She succeeds in obtaining from a Ukrainian a cat from Kazakhstan named Lazuli, an Ojos Azules, a breed decreed extinct because of its health problems. She then tries to revive this breed and presents her cat at an exhibition, but the jury tells her that the mutation linked to its eyes was different from that of Ojos Azules. The idea then came to her of a British Shorthair with blue eyes, the beginning of the "Celestial project", whose name refers to the beauty of the azure sky. Lazuli's gene proved to be dominant: it brings blue eyes to half the kittens, but also small white marks at the end of the paws and tail. This new color of British is refused by the clubs, so she must either abandon the idea or create a breed.
