English rabbit breeders began to increase the size of the French chinchilla in the early 20th century. They obtained the chinchilla giganta in the 1920s, which weighs about 4 kg. The Germans then quickly became interested in this rabbit because the market for large chinchilla skins is very strong. To obtain skins of the best possible quality, they cross this rabbit with other large breeds as well as with Angora rabbits. This is how the grand chinchilla was born as the French standard recognizes it from 1948.

Le burmese est décrit par Christiane Sacase comme exubérant et sportif ; il s'adapterait à la vie en appartement mais préfèrerait vivre en extérieur où il serait bon chasseur. Il est fidèle et affectueux avec son maître. Sa voix rappellerait celle du siamois. Le docteur Bruce Fogle considèrent que ce sont des chats très attachés à leur maître, voire collants.

The grand chinchilla is a medium-sized rabbit weighing between 3.5 and 5.5 kg. It has a slightly elongated cylindrical body with powerful and compact musculature. Its head is quite strong in the male. It has two straight and thick ears of 12 to 14.5 cm. A slight dewlap is tolerated in the female. The eyes are dark brownish. The fur is dense, quite long and supple. It presents a gray ash color with bluish reflections and a wavy chenille on the back due to bunches of stiff hairs. The top of the tail is black and the underside of the body and the area around the eyes is white.
