Chapter 1

Getting to know the Kurilian Bobtail

Origins & history

A story told

This natural breed comes from the Kuril Islands, on the border between Russia and Japan. No human intervention modified the breed and their particular tail is the result of a spontaneous genetic mutation similar to that of the Japanese Bobtail. Existing at least since the 17th century, this breed remained unknown due to the political withdrawal of the Soviet Union and was not registered by the International Feline Federation until the early 1990s. The breed encounters difficulties in gaining recognition by feline federations because of its great similarity with the Japanese Bobtail. TICA registered the long-hair and short-hair varieties in the Preliminary New Breed category in 2008.

Character

Daily temperament

Character traits are above all a function of each cat's history and therefore perfectly individual. However, the Kurilian Bobtail is described as a sociable but independent cat. According to the LOOF, it is a cat that needs space. He would like water and would not hesitate to dive into his owner's bathtub.

Physical

Breed standard

No crossing with another breed is authorized. In no case should the Kurilian Bobtail resemble a Japanese Bobtail.
