Bobtail américain

The breed was discovered in 1965 by an American couple, the Sanders, in the State of Arizona. The kitten had a wild appearance and a short tail curled up on its back. They immediately decided to adopt it and named it Yodie. It was crossed with a Siamese. One of the kittens born from this litter was crossed with a cream cat and the kittens born from this union are the first subjects of the breed. First, there was only short hair, but the breed was crossed with Persians to obtain a semi-long hair variety. This breed has been recognized by the TICA since 1989. It is also recognized by the LOOF but remains rare in Europe.

Bobtails are reputed to be patient, active but gentle cats. They are said to be attached to their owner and would not like solitude. They are said to generally get along well with dogs. It is also said that they are good hunters.

The lack of tail is due to a natural genetic mutation. In general, the Bobtail is a medium to large cat whose growth is slow, until two or three years old. The body is athletic and gives an impression of power. Males are bulkier than females, although both should have a well-muscled body. The paws are proportionate to the body, with massive bone structure and powerful musculature. The forelegs are slightly shorter than the hind legs. The feet are round and wide. The head is wide with powerful jaws and medium-sized ears, wide at their base. They are placed quite low on the head. The eyes are large and wide, oval in shape. Their color should match that of the coat. The tail is therefore short, between 2.5 and 10 cm depending on the subjects. The absence of tail or curled tail are defects eliminating in exhibition. In short-haired and semi-long-haired subjects, the coat is hirsute with hair more abundant at the level of the ruff, the breech, the belly and the tail. In semi-long-haired Bobtails, it is preferable to have tufts of hair between the paws. All colors and all coats are accepted.
