Dog age in human years
"One dog year equals seven human years" is a handy but false shortcut. A one-year-old dog is already sexually mature and nearly adult skeletically, roughly 15 human years. After maturity, a mastiff ages nearly twice as fast as a chihuahua. This calculator uses the AVMA table, which accounts for adult size.
10 à 22 kg — a giant dog ages significantly faster than a small dog after maturity.
Equivalent human age
29years
Adulte
Most stable period. Monthly weigh-in, annual vet visit, dental care — this determines quality of life in later years.
Method: AVMA table: 15 human years in year one, +9 in year two, then +5 per year for a moyen dog.
These equivalences are statistical benchmarks drawn from published veterinary tables. Every animal ages at its own pace, depending on genetics, diet and care. This calculator is neither a diagnosis nor veterinary advice.
Frequently asked questions
One dog year equals how many human years?
Approximately 15 human years, not 7. The first year of a dog covers growth, puberty and skeletal maturity — the equivalent of all of human childhood and adolescence. The second year adds roughly 9 years (24 total), then the pace depends on size: roughly +4 years per year for a small dog, +5 for medium, +6 for large and +7 for giant.
Why do large dogs age faster?
It is one of the best-documented traits of the canine species: unlike what we see between species, large breeds have shorter life spans. A German Shepherd is considered senior around 6 years, a Chihuahua around 10. The dominant hypothesis links this to faster and more intense growth, with a higher cellular cost.
At what age is my dog a senior?
In practice, when he has passed roughly half the life expectancy of his breed — 6 years for a giant, 8 for a medium dog, 10 for a small dog. This is when to switch from annual vet check-ups to bi-annual check-ups with blood work: kidneys, thyroid and joints are managed much more easily when detected early.
Is this calculation accurate for my dog specifically?
No, and no calculator can be. It is a population benchmark. Individual genetics, diet, ideal weight and regularity of care vary the actual aging by several years. Maintaining ideal weight is the most documented modifiable factor.
And how is their health?
Age is just a number. Six questions about weight, diet and what you observe daily, and you get a health score out of 100 with concrete actions.
