Changing dry food without diarrhea: the 7-day protocol

Switching brands often causes loose stools, vomiting, or outright refusal to eat. With a gradual 7-day transition, you avoid 90% of digestive upset.

💡 In brief: Always mix old + new food for at least 7 days. Gradually increase the proportion of the new food. If the pet refuses or has diarrhea, slow down — don't go back to zero.

You're switching brands, moving from dry to wet, or upgrading to a higher-quality diet? Good — but never do it overnight. The gut microbiome needs a few days to adapt to new proteins, fiber, or additives.

Why a gradual transition

Your pet's intestines host billions of bacteria that digest daily food. A sudden change disrupts this balance:

  • Diarrhea (the most common symptom).
  • Vomiting or regurgitation.
  • Bloating or gas.
  • Refusal to eat from the new bowl.

These signs don't mean the new food is bad — they mean the microbiome hasn't had time to adjust.

The 7-day protocol

📌 Recommended timeline:

>

- Days 1–2: 75% old + 25% new

- Days 3–4: 50% old + 50% new

- Days 5–6: 25% old + 75% new

- Day 7: 100% new

For a very sensitive pet (dog with chronic kidney disease, elderly cat, puppy or kitten), double the duration: 14 days with 3-day steps.

If things go wrong

Diarrhea on day 3

Stay at 50/50 for 2 more days before advancing. If it persists, return to 75% old and wait for stools to firm up.

Complete refusal to eat

  • Try mixing thoroughly (not side-by-side): cats especially sort easily.
  • Warm slightly if it's wet food (to 86°F / 30°C) to release aromas.
  • Don't give in by switching back to 100% old: space out meals to stimulate appetite.

Vomiting

If 2+ episodes in 24 hours → stop the transition, return to 100% old, and consult your vet.

Special cases

Switching from "premium" to "super-premium"

Often much higher in animal proteins. A 10-day transition is prudent.

Switching to BARF or raw

Never in 7 days. A minimum 3-week transition, ideally with veterinary nutritionist support.

Pet with digestive history

Systematically double the steps. A prescribed probiotic can help over 2 weeks.

What you must NOT do

⚠️ Avoid: changing food during a gastro episode, after surgery, or on moving day. The body handles multiple stresses poorly at once.

During transition: monitor

  • Stool consistency: rate visually 1 (hard) to 7 (liquid). Goal: 2–3.
  • Appetite: stable or increasing.
  • Energy: no marked drop.
  • Coat: dull or greasy = bad sign at day 7.

All these should return to normal within 7 days after transition ends. If not, the food may not be right for your pet.

✅ Key takeaway: 7 days = minimum, 14 if in doubt, 21 for raw. Slow down at the first digestive sign, but don't reverse course: that's starting from scratch again.
