Why spayed cats gain weight

Spaying reduces energy needs by 20 to 30% (WSAVA studies). Appetite stays the same, or even increases. Result: 35 to 40% of spayed cats become overweight or obese.

An obese cat lives on average 2 to 3 years less. It develops more diabetes, arthritis, urinary problems (FLUTD).

3 essential nutritional rules

1. Controlled calories

Aim for 340 to 380 kcal / 100g for dry food (vs 380-420 for a non-spayed cat). Foods labeled "sterilised" or "light" are generally well-formulated on this criterion.

2. High protein

Cats are strict carnivores. Aim for 30 to 42% protein (FEDIAF). Protein preserves lean mass even under caloric restriction, unlike a cat where you just reduce the amount.

3. L-carnitine and fiber

  • L-carnitine: helps metabolize fats — naturally present in red meat or added in many "sterilised" dry foods
  • Moderate fiber (1 to 4%): satiety + transit. Beyond 5%, may reduce protein absorption

Portion sizing

The simplified calculation for an adult spayed cat:

RER = 70 × (weight kg)^0.75

DER = RER × 0.8 (spayed sedentary factor)

Example: 4kg cat → RER ≈ 198 kcal → DER ≈ 158 kcal/day. If the dry food is 380 kcal/100g, daily portion = 42g/day, divided into 2 or 3 meals.

Our portion calculator adjusts automatically based on your cat's activity and weight.

Wet food vs dry food?

A mix of wet + dry is often ideal:

  • Wet food (~75% water) helps hydration and prevents urinary stones
  • Dry food promotes chewing and dental health
  • 50/50 by weight = ~30% of calories from wet food, 70% from dry

Monitor weight

Weigh your cat every 2 months. A variation >5% from ideal weight is a signal. On SokoScan, you can track your cat's weight and wellness score over time.
