Cat not eating: why it's urgent (and what to do)
A cat fasting for over 48 hours risks hepatic lipidosis. Possible causes, the countdown to know, and tips to stimulate appetite.
Your cat has stopped eating since yesterday? In cats, this symptom is managed differently than in dogs: a feline that fasts, especially if overweight, can develop hepatic lipidosis within 48 to 72 hours — a potentially fatal liver failure. SokoScan Labs methodology: first the countdown, then the causes, then the tips that really work.
The countdown: how long can a cat go without eating?
| Time without eating | Situation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Less than 24 hours | Cat otherwise healthy | Close monitoring, try the tips below |
| 24 to 48 hours | Even without other symptoms | Call your veterinarian |
| More than 48 hours | Regardless of apparent condition | Veterinary consultation mandatory, risk of lipidosis |
| From the first hours | Kitten, diabetic cat, lethargy, vomiting | Immediate emergency |
⚠️ The heavier the cat, the faster hepatic lipidosis develops. An overweight cat that stops eating is paradoxically the most urgent case.
Why does a cat stop eating?
- Oral or dental pain — gingivitis, broken tooth, ulcers: the cat is hungry but eating hurts. It approaches the bowl then backs away.
- Changed or stale food — new package, new recipe from the manufacturer, stale kibble (bag open for more than 4-6 weeks): the cat is hyper-selective about smell.
- Stress — moving, new pet, construction, change of bowl location. The cat is a creature of routine.
- Blocked nose — a cat with a cold that can't smell its food won't eat. Warming up wet food increases aromas.
- Illness — kidney failure, pancreatitis, digestive disease, foreign body… Loss of appetite is the most common presenting symptom in feline medicine.
- Hairballs / nausea — a nauseous cat licks its lips, drools, and turns away from the bowl.
Stimulating appetite: tips that work
1. Warm the wet food for 10-15 seconds in the microwave (lukewarm, never hot): smell is the #1 trigger for feline appetite.
2. Offer highly palatable wet food — the juice from a can of tuna in water (exceptionally) can break through the situation.
3. Wide, low bowl, clean, away from the litter box, in a quiet place and elevated if needed.
4. Freshness of kibble — store it in its original sealed bag, not loose in a container.
5. Never force with a syringe without veterinary advice, and don't let "hunger make it give in": this reasoning, valid in dogs, is dangerous in cats.
Prevention: a bowl your cat won't avoid
A picky cat often has a real problem with its food — artificial flavors masking poor-quality raw materials, rapid rancidity, silent recipe changes. Scan its kibble and wet food with SokoScan to check the composition, and if you need to change food, follow the 7-day transition protocol. The choice of kibble or wet food also matters: wet is often better accepted by elderly or recovering cats.
✅ To remember: 24 hours without eating in a cat = call the veterinarian; 48 hours = veterinary consultation mandatory (risk of hepatic lipidosis, especially if overweight). In the meantime: warm wet food, calm environment, clean bowl. A cat is never "just picky" for long — find the cause.
